I would not usually post photography, because I don't do much of it. Had to get original stock for Literature project. There are a few pictures of scattered leaves which I feel are too mediocre to share - this one, I hope, conveys the blankness intended in a simple-enough fashion.

& Set after the Bleach fiasco is somewhat over (Ichigo actually goes back to having a somewhat peaceful life, Rukia is back in Division 13, the Gotei 13 is more or less stable, etc.). I would imagine this to be set about 5 - 10 years after mentioned fiasco, when the serving generation can still remember clearly and it isn't "ancient history".

& Believe it or not, I started writing this in October 2005. Fear my ~~lack of~~ determination to complete fics.

& The two parts of this are connected - it may however be read as two separate parts.

As a sudden wind blows across the Kuchiki courtyard, the lights in the corridor room flicker. The steady dark silhouette on the wall is rendered distorted, and the shadows cast onto the paper which Kuchiki Rukia writes on contort themselves into twists, as though they are strangling her delicate calligraphy.

She puts down her brush and lays her head in her hands, listening to the sound of rain. In the warmth of her room the rain is strangely dissonant, and she can only hear a constant, soothing spray falling.

Nonetheless, the sound of rain presents a familiar tune to her ears. Rukia can vaguely hear patterns as droplets fall, and she wonders if anyone else like her, observes the melody of rain. It is like art - rain is after all personified to be the voice of Heaven (Rukia finds this a cruel irony, considering that she already rests in Heaven), and it takes a patient mind to read the emotions of one that far up.

There is a contrasting scenario beneath.

The temperature in Karakura falls drastically in a few days, just between autumn and winter. The people enjoy picking up a quaint leaf from the street, admire its sheer redness, a beautiful flash of colour before dropping. They huddle together in the subway, a reflex action of protection against the cold, but everything else is the same. The train whizzes past in the same systematic manner as it would in spring or summer, picking up passengers, the familiar female Japanese voice still announcing arrivals over the PA system.

At night the temperature drops further, and even the thick-downed migratory birds hide in the trees to rest. It is possible to hear the leaves shaking as the wind blows, as though shivering.

Ichigo sits in his pleasantly heated room, the doors locked as to prevent intrusion. He is hunched over a Physics textbook, muttering formulae incoherently to himself before he keys a number into his calculator. There is something wrong with the value - it does not correspond with common sense or logic. The boy rubs his eyes and sighs, looking out of the window.

The street lights are dimmer than usual today and he can see the night sky clearly. Staring above, he tries to spot the constellations, but Ichigo is never someone who observes such details, and he cannot identify the quaint formation of the stars. He is about to look away when a flash of light flickers throughout the curtain of black.

Ichigo first thinks that it is a trail of butterfly dust, before he realizes that it is a rare shooting star.

She visits Karakura a few years after you sight the meteor.

This time, she does not sift through your window in the same style as she did the first time. Before, you watched incredulously as she trailed through the window, the cloth of her robes following in a sweep of black, shocked and confused at this anonymous entity that suddenly entered into your house. Of course, you had no idea then that she would proceed to change your life.

You lie in bed, on the verge of falling asleep when she steps openly through the window. The look on your face is pleasant surprise, and she grins at you rather uncharacteristically when she sees you. Kon jumps from his desk table, and the ruckus that he makes is annoying (as usual). Rukia watches the both of you, souls belonging to a different world, and sits down on your study table, examining your notes.

Tonight you are too tired to get up and say hello, so you simply lie in bed as she studies your room with interest. The relationship between the both of you has already progressed to such intense familiarity, even without the presence of each other, that no one blames each other for the lack of formality.

A cloud moves over the moon, momentarily blocking its yellow light.

How very beautiful, you think to yourself, and how very reminiscent this scene was. That night Urahara Kisuke sat languidly on your window, waiting for you to pop into shingami form with your untrained Zangetsu. The moon was shining when Kuchiki Byakuya slashed your side in an almost fatal injury. The clouds were flowing when the butterflies led them to the traveling gates, and you saw her petite form step through into a light so blindingly bright in comparison to the mellow black of your surroundings.

"I hope to be seated," Rukia says casually, after you have closed your eyes. She tells you about how Ukitake and Byakuya have finally mentioned that she may be promoted. It does not surprise you, but you simply rise in the presumptuous air of yours and frown, teasing her for her weakness of taking so long.

She scowls, and counters that not everyone has the same talent as you.

By then you have already swallowed your words, and you realize that the space between both of you is quaint, strange and mysterious. How is Soul Society now, you ask in a half-joking tone, expecting her to feed you the progression of the various divisions. A wane smile crosses her cheeks and she tells you a long story about flowers and snow, grass and rain. It is a strange thing to talk about, but Soul Society has been racked by chaos ever since the incident both of you know too well about.

But Soul Society is just a higher community filled with a hidden pain that both of you keep silent about, because what else can both of you do except guard it?

You ask her when she is leaving, and she says later tonight.

That means tomorrow, nobody will remember a girl who sifted between the streets of Karakura, her violet eyes reflecting the iridescence of the moon. She will only be a shinigami, drifting like a lost identity from one area to another, fulfilling the task which all these elite souls have chosen to undertake. The Kurosaki family may or may not have seen her, but for your sake they will pretend not to have noticed.

Isshin will emerge in his liveliness and eccentricity, and Karin will greet you, bored, shaking her head at the dynamics which you father and son will have. Yuzu will bring down the breakfast and greet you with her cheerful, caring "Ichi-nii", beaming in the small apron that was passed down from your late mother. Your eyes will catch the sun's first rays, and when you walk to the garden your skin will feel the cool dew that has condensed upon the grass. There is something different to your expression when you recall the incidents of today.

The owls flap overhead, and the silhouette of the moon shines bright and illuminating in the deep throat of the night sky. Your eyes struggle to open as you watch her form drift to your cupboards and pull out a familiar set of pyjamas - a set that Yuzu cried over because it was her favourite, and she never found it in her cupboard again.

You dream of a black butterfly and an orange star.

This is an excerpt from Love is a Parallax from Sylvia Plath, and somehow or rather I find it very fitting to the entire IchiRuki relationship, both from Ichigo and Rukia's point of view.

Hitsugaya x Hinamori, that was my Bleach OTP.. last year. Regrettably, I have been moving on to other things.. but well. I still like it :) Enough rambling. It's been a long time since I've actually drawn fanart, and the crosshatching didn't turn out the way I would have liked it to (blame me for using a pen instead of pencil). And I got caught not paying attention in class.

Oh well Bleach > class anytime.

If one walked past the sixth division headquarters, there would be something that openly differentiated it from the other twelve. It was an established fact that the surroundings of every division had its own distinctive aura - the eleventh was constantly spilling with rash, hot-blooded reiatsu, and the fourth pulsated a calm, soothing energy - but the sixth was something so mixed it could not be real.

The Gotei 13 recognized the sixth captain, Kuchiki Byakuya, to be a stoic, level-headed man. He was not the first noble to ascend the throne of a shinigami captain, nor did they think he would be the last. He resembled all of his predesessors - cold, haughty and successful. Yet Kuchiki-sama surpassed them in every way possible, and defied all predictions.

The people from the sixth division found it ironic that their leader was hard to predict. One could barely sense where he was. The subordinates joked that Kuchiki-taichou was too well camouflaged within his surroundings. This entire division metaphored the flower he knew best - the symbol worn on the insides of shinigami attire and vice-captain badges. Even the structure of its office was based on the petals of this flower. Every single day, the training yard was scattered with sakura - whether it came from the trees or his sword was only something the trained could tell.

Byakuya was an avoided man, because he was supreme even as a shinigami (and they were all supposed to be gods), and extremely unpredictable. This was highly ironic. One who followed rules, should have had his life drafted out by the rules. When he almost died at the hand of a cruel sword threatening to pierce his sister, his subordinates simply sighed to themselves.

Abarai Renji contributed an interesting, strange reiatsu to the air. His was one well-managed, sealed neatly in a sword at his side. One could only enter the sixth division after remarkable mental training - control over emotions and impulse was highly important. Kuchiki Byakuya would not tolerate the madness that imperviated the eleventh division, or the eccentric idealogies that the twelfth entertained. There must be respect, formality, a head held up high.

If one stayed still and felt the pulsating pressure in the air, they would know that his calm spiritual energy was throbbing madly beneath. The politics of Shinigami government oppressed one's free personality, and this was where Renji becomes nothing more than sixth division fukutaichou. Labels that named him a casual redhead or passionate fighter were then eradicated.

The sixth division was perfect when Kuchiki Byakuya and Abarai Renji came together. Beneath the stoic image of the Kuchiki, people failed to sense a mild pain throbbing through him. This intangible feeling intensified when Rukia - the petite shinigami, early graduate from the Academy; his sister - came over. He was skilled at masking his thoughts, and the shinigami of his division chose not to bother. One who knew Kuchiki Byakuya long enough knew better than to question him - he was deeper than a mirror, and more unfathomable than a maze.

Captains and vice-captains should have complementing - if not similar - personalities, but both of theirs clashed together. However, it was far from chaotic - it was delicate and artistic in a queer way. When the shinigami got together with their friends and mentioned the sixth division, their only response towards their captain-vicecaptain relationship was just a sigh and shake of the head.

On training days, when the entire division gathered, shinigamis from outside divisions sat upon the rooftops and watched. Renji would release Zabimaru and the segmented blade would twirl in the air, leaving a trail of Senbonzakura's petals in its wake. As Zabimaru returned to his hilt, the numerous sakura petals fell, kissing the earth gently, as the wind caused by the lashing out of the Serpent's Tail gradually diminished.

There would be murmurs of awe resounding on the roof, all applauding this strange, beautiful sight.

One day Renji pulls the ricepaper screen apart hurriedly as he dashes into the division's courtyard. He needs to train the younger shinigami and inform them of their duties - his personal weariness of little consequence. Zabimaru has not recovered entirely from the Hollow confrontation a few days back, but that is irrelevant. Responsibilities must be fulfilled - as he runs and catches the gleam of his vice-captain badge on the side of his sleeve, he only sprints faster.

He is confused when none of the lower shinigami stands among the trees. There is nobody there, and Renji blanches, because in this institution one must be careful, and here he is being unmeticulous.

Shit. Renji curses inwardly, turning back, the trail of his attire billowing behind him. He approaches the ricepaper screen, his thin hands reaching out to pull it open. Getting the schedule wrong is a grave mistake of his, and he would have to go back to the Main Office to check. Maybe he was late for some vice-captain assembly, or - here he prays inwardly for it not to be so - another Hollow eradicating mission, and will suffer demerit before the credits of the Center 46.

"Wait." The cool, calm voice that emerges behind the trees are unmistakably his captain's, and Renji stopps in his tracks, spinning around to address the man whom he looks up to the most. (He could not quite differentiate Aizen and Byakuya and Ichigo before, but now he knows better.) Up till then he can still feel his gut twisting slightly when coming face-to-face with the noble - a feeling of inferiority which he can somehow never shake off.

There is a long silence between them both, silence coming from a naturally untalkative man, and silence coming from one who did not dare to speak. The wind blows suddenly, sweeping leaves to the side of the yard, and filters through both their hair.

"I-" Renji begins, an effort to initiate conversation. Byakuya silences him, uninterested in what he has to say, with his own words. "I have observed that you mastered bankai over six months ago."

Almost at once Renji's small eyes widens as he hears that smooth voice, filled with the pride and grace that encircled the sixth division. As the briefest emotion flickers across his face, it does not go past with Byakuya not noticing it. He knows that Renji is surprised, and he raises his brow slightly, almost in quizzical questioning. It is only natural that he knows - how is it that one's captain can be unaware of his own subordinate's progress?

The red-haired shinigami inclines his head slightly, both out of respect and shame. It was an assumption, based on old reasoning (and Renji remembers clearly how he resented the fact that Kuchiki Byakuya never discovered that he reached the level of bankai when he first gained it), that Kuchiki Byakuya would not notice the advancement of his zapakutou. Inside, he twitches - it is ironic indeed that what he once wished for is now discovered and acknowledged.

But Renji does not want anyone to know, not even Shuuhei-sempai, or Ikkaku-kun, or Kira-kun, and least of all Kuchiki-taichou. There is something that keeps him to the sixth division, but he can't pinpoint what. It must be something to do with the texture of the air, or the familiar feel of shinigami running through it, or the paperwork on his table that has the insignia of a sakura imprinted on the top right-hand corner.

"Show me," Byakuya says, and he pulls out Senbonzakura from his side. Renji knows that he has to oblige.

Both of them stand, reeling in the aftermath of their battle, heaving furiously. There are evident scratches and tears in each other's attire, sweat and feverish determination in each other's eyes, but there is no blood.

They remember the blood, how much blood there was in their first bankai-to-bankai battle, splashes of red all over the place, the petals of Byakuya's sakura tinged with the sticky red glue, the glue that bound them together as leaders of the sixth division.

Byakuya thinks that perhaps he is not so superior to Renji anymore, because Senbonzakura cannot slash him that easily. The petals float in a predetermined manner along the flick of his command, raining incessantly towards the marked target. But Renji extends the Baboon King and detaches its spine - this time, they rush towards Byakuya quicker than before, with a dangerous intent so powerful that Byakuya summons the quickest speed of shunpo he can. The noble acknowledges that Renji is equal in skill to him - and that is why no blood comes from Renji, not a drop at all.

Renji then realizes that he has reached Kuchiki Byakuya's level, for while his captain stands unscathed, so does he. His captain's bankai is unable to do damage to himself, very much unlike before, when he lay torn and broken at Byakuya's will. Although he is neither pained nor bleeding now, his heart feels a strange sort of sadness and desire to return to the past. Renji stares at the kenseikan on Byakuya's hair (he refuses to look him in the eyes) and hopes, almost in a faint prayer, that Kuchiki-taichou simply took it easy on him.

He does not want to leave the sixth division, not any more.

The air caused by Zabimaru twists and turns, and the cherry blossom blades float on its currents follow. They spin in the air, strategic directions (like how Renji wills Zabimaru to attack) before landing. Only that this time they are both in bankai mode, and the intensity of this dance is multiplied. Both of them watch, because it is not only pretty but insightful. It was an insight to their abilities, but most importantly, them.

Silently, the Kuchiki stretches out his hand and Senbonzakura returns, the many petals that have fallen rising and piecing together to the shape of a katana. Byakuya sheathes the blade and turns around, the swish of his captain's cloak following his elegant frame. The wind has suddenly stopped blowing and a bird twitters overhead. Next week, he will tell his vice-captain that he has been transferred to another division, and he will no longer be sixth division fukutaichou. The Gotei 13 will recognize him as Abarai-taichou, and they would be equivalents, wearing the same white cloak that differentiated the thirteen leaders.

Renji breathes heavily as he watches the diminishing form of Kuchiki Byakuya disppear through the ricepaper screen. He too sheathes his zanpakutou and the sakura remains scattered, the undecipherable evidence of an astonishing art.

Additional Notes:

- The imagery of Zabimaru cutting through a sea of sakura in the air is too much for me not to write something about it. I argue that there is nothing yaoi-ish in this for it is mere imagery; but for all you shounen-ai fans, you may take this as an apt metaphor.

& Senbonzakura - Byakuya's zanpakutou. Releases at the command of chire and scatters into a thousand tiny blades which resemble cherry petals. Zabimaru - Renji's zanpakutou, literally Serpent's Tail. Releases at the command of hoero and extends into a many-segmented, whip-like weapon. (Definitions from here.)

& If you have mastered bankai, you are fit enough to be a captain. And personally, I think that it would be better and more beneficial both for the shingami and the Gotei 13 to put one's skill to better use, instead of staying at a lower-ranked post. Hence explaining Byakuya's intentions.

& I will assume that division captains have to take the role of training the younger shinigami for missions and tasks. And if you will, captain and vice captain may even spar together.

& The title was thought of when I watched the Kimimaro vs. Gaara match from Naruto. That was four months ago - so if you can't tell, this fic has been a rather on-off effort. As an honourable mention, aziraphale_mel and postcognitive were the ones who motivated me to finish this four-month old one-shot, thanks to the endless ~~porn and hotsex~~ fic spazzing on my entries / friendspage.
